FAQ
What is a Dental Crown?
A crown is a ‘cap’ that is shaped to match your tooth. It is used to entirely cover the tooth, helping to strengthen it, and restore its appearance, shape, size and alignment within the mouth. There are different types of crowns, and they can be made from different materials depending on their location and function in the mouth. Optimal aesthetics can be achieved with colour matching and contouring to your existing teeth. Crowns are fitted and cemented permanently to your natural teeth. For heavily restored or broken teeth, crowns are an excellent way to protect and strengthen them, so they can last for years to come.
When do you need a Crown?
When a tooth is severely broken, or has been heavily restored with multiple fillings, a crown is often the best option. Heavily restored teeth have insufficient natural tooth structure to effectively retain any future direct fillings, compromising the longevity of restorations. Fragile teeth are also highly prone to fractures, which can present much more complex dental issues down the track.
A crown acts as a ‘cap’ for your tooth, strengthening the remaining tooth structure and prevents the tooth from splitting or fracturing in the future. It is a great long-term treatment option to keep your tooth for years to come.

At Adelaide One Dental we can complete your crown in just one appointment, thanks to the latest enhancements in 3-D technology. Local anaesthetic is used to achieve a painless procedure. The tooth involved is prepared by the dentist, followed by a 3D digital scan of the tooth. The dentist will then digitally design your crown and have it made on site by our state-of-the-art Cerec machine.
The Cerec crown is polished and cemented onto your tooth all in the one visit, saving you valuable time and effort.
What is a Dental bridge?
A bridge is a dental restoration placed to replace one or more missing teeth. It is where a prosthetic tooth is attached to an adjacent crown (or crowns) to restore a space in the dental arch. The bridge is permanently cemented onto existing natural teeth adjacent a missing tooth. This means that you do not need to remove and clean the bridge, it is a permanent and fixed solution. Optimal aesthetics can be achieved with colour matching and contouring to your existing teeth.
When do you need a bridge?
When there are missing teeth in a dental arch, function (chewing) and aesthetics can both be affected. The remaining teeth may also drift into the empty spaces. This can change a patient’s occlusion and reduce alignment of the remaining teeth. A bridge is a permanent option to restore the spaces, and hence restore function and aesthetics for the patient.
